An Athens man was booked into jail on April 15th, 2021, after putting five children's lives in danger. Everett Maurice Hackney, 30, of Athens, crashed his Dodge Caravan around 7 p.m. while coming off an exit ramp. The van rolled and burst into flames. The five underage passengers in the vehicle all made it to safety before Athens firefighters arrived.
Hackney was charged with endangering minors under the age of 14 because he did not have the children in safety belts or child-restraint seats. Hackney was also charged with a DUI for driving while intoxicated, having an open container in the vehicle, driving with a suspended license, failing to maintain lanes, and speeding.
Police could not comment on the extent of the children's injuries.
