Around 6:30 p.m. on April 24th, 2021, on the border of Suwanee and Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County police responded to a fatal crash.
On the I-985 north, a 16 passenger van flipped and caught fire, where six people were confirmed dead, and the remaining passengers were injured.
Bystanders, including off-duty paramedics and nurses, rushed to the scene and tried to pull victims from the burning van and administer aid. One man ran up to the vehicle and tried kicking in the window to get people out of the flames.
There were people trapped inside the vehicle, but the heat was so intense those helping couldn't get within 10 feet of the burning van.
The victims were part of a sober living group heading to a meeting in Buford. Sunday was to be a graduation day for some of the group.
The identity of the victims has not been revealed.
Police are still working to conclude what caused the accident in the first place. Witness statements indicate another vehicle may be directly or indirectly involved in the accident.
The Brown Firm sends its deepest condolences to the victims and their families.
